ENERGY SECTOR RECEIVED HUGE INVESTMENT SAYS MAHAMA

President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, says government has invested a lot in the energy sector because it holds the key to national development.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the Bui Power Project in the Brong Ahafo Region, the President appealed to the private sector to complement government’s effort in boosting the country’s energy needs.

The President revealed that some private power producers “have lined up to sign power purchase agreement to supply power into the national power grid under independent power producer agreement.”

The Energy Ministry according to President Mahama has been directed to fast track work on the various mini hydro projects because the early completion of these projects “will deliver another 200 megawatts of clean hydro-power into our generation system.”

In the area of solar power, the Volta River Authority (VRA) is said to have commenced feeding in solar power into Ghana’s transmission grid from the Navrongo solar power plant.

The Bui Power Project which started in October 2007 is expected to add 400 megawatts of power to the national grid.

In a related development, the Energy and Petroleum Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah announced some major expansions works that the Ministry will embark on to ensure effective functioning of the nation’s power system.

He pledged the commitment of his Ministry to “expand the distribution infrastructure to improve our electricity distribution.”

Present at the ceremony was former President John Kufuor and other government officials.
