WHAT IS PETROLEUM?

The term petroleum is used interchangeably with crude oil. It is a general term for oil and natural gas. The word petroleum is gotten from the Latin word 'Petra' meaning 'rock' and 'oleum' meaning 'oil', therefore it is a Latin word meaning 'rock oil'.

It is a 'fossil fuel', meaning it was made from the decay of plant and animal remains. Petroleum is a natural resource, often found in rock formations. It is flammable, and appears as a yellow-black liquid consisting of gaseous, liquid, and solid hydrocarbons.
